- Cost Engineer
- posted on 23/01/2003
location Bedfordshire description The overall purpose of the role is to establish a cost engineering function to set targets for the level of expenditure by the company that will work with its suppliers to develop a leaner, more efficient component and systems costs base. These targets will challenge the design and purchasing departments to develop and source components at the most competitive cost available. Initially, the team will concentrate on the upper-body parts of the vehicle, but, ultimately, it will provide an estimating service specialising in injection moulding, metal forming, textiles, electrical and electronics and assembly techniques. The cost estimating and benchmarking function will construct accurate and justifiable costs from the ground up, to ensure that they are paying the best price for the parts. Part of the role will entail evaluating existing costing tools, developing / obtaining new tools and maintaining them. The benchmarking aspect of the role will be minimal, but will certainly play an important part in ensuring that the team is up-to-date with technology trends and best practice. The output of the cost analysis team will be used for setting challenging budgets on future vehicles in order to ensure that the designers and buyers are designing to cost, and identifying optimised solutions. This person will also provide support to the product development team during development to ensure that quotes for design changes are cost effective. From time to time, members of the cost team will be called upon to work with the company's buyers in order to ensure that suppliers can justify / optimise their quotes. skills Experience of cost estimating in a manufacturing / engineering environment is essential - such as textiles, injection moulding, metal forming, electrical /electronics and assembly. Preferably a team player, able to develop strong working relationships and constantly looking for ways to improve systems and processes.

location Bedfordshire description As a truly global organisation with an instantly recognisable product portfolio, they are also the fourth largest automotive company in the world. These two facts alone highlight the extent to which any role within the organisation will allow progression into other areas of the business. The Technical Centre acts as the centre for design and development for European models. The facilities represent a £54million investment in the UK since 1988. The site is in easy commuting distance from the M1. It is set in landscaped grounds, with state-of-the-art equipment. The offices are open-plan, including that of the Managing Director, and whilst they work to extremely tight deadlines, the "people" aspect is never forgotten as they foster a strong team working ethic. The lines of communication are clear and open and the company is not status driven. Whilst an operational hierarchy does exist, respect is earned by delivery in a company that has very little pretence. This role will form part of a team charged with establishing a new department, dedicated to having a significant influence on a car from the concept stage through to roll out. The company are relying on this group of engineers to set the future aspects on new models and as such this high level of responsibility will attract a significant amount of attention from within the group. The goal of becoming "IT Leader" is now the most important, widely stated priority and this team will turn the dream into reality. As such the engineers will be working with cutting edge technology, charged with developing what was once thought to be impossible. The concepts delivered by this team will help the company target specific customer groups whilst establishing a stronger brand awareness in the consumer market, in addition to cementing relationships with organisations better known for their consumer electronic products. The IT sector of the automotive industry is currently its fastest growing area in which the most significant advances will be made over the coming years - far outstripping that predicted within powertrain or BIW etc. The role will allow the engineers the chance to follow the concept throughout its life cycle and will provide them with the chance to make a positive contribution to the company's growing success.
The overall purpose of the role is to establish how to introduce new technology into future models maintaining a deliverable reality whilst aiming to satisfy predicted customer demand. Initially the team will need to focus on developing a robust strategy to deliver the goal of "Automotive IT Leader." Essentially the team will assess the technology what is already available and transferable now in areas such as consumer electronics whilst investigating ways of adding value to the technology in order to make the functionality relevant and accessible to the driver. The role will involve working with a team of multi-site, mixed discipline engineers and technical marketing specialists in order to review possible Telematics, Technical innovation, Navigation Systems and Man Machine Interface related technology whilst looking at the potential developments or derivatives of those products for the future. These ideas are then reviewed from a systems level implementation perspective, prior to focusing on a more detailed basis on factors such as cost / feasibility. This information is derived as part of the strategy and before being incorporated into a practical application plan that ultimately enables the total communication of the concept to the design department for delivery. This person will also be expected to shadow the development of the concept, on occasion acting as the interface between the design and supplier teams. Part of the role will also involve conducting situation appraisals of current technology on models with more imminent release dates, however the main focus of this team will be on future models. This position does not represent a stereotypical design / development role because it is charged with combining the disciplines of vehicle engineering, advanced technology, future strategy planning, business planning, marketing, customer research and vehicle planning. Everything that is developed by the team needs to bealigned with the business strategy, based on sound engineering technology and should always focus on customer satisfaction / added value to the driving experience. skills Qualified to at least Degree level with experience in one or more of the following areas: telematics, electronic systems, MMI development, advanced engineering, telephone / PDA development, vehicle interior concept design, technical marketing. Ideally from within consumer electronics - e.g. mobile phones, laptop technology, or automotive electronic technology, you will have confidence in your knowledge and ability, open to new ideas, contribute to team goals while achieving individual targets and be constantly looking at new ways of improving systems and processes.
