Their clients are offered a unique blend of experience and expertise in the fields of optics, electro-optics, electronics, software and precision mechanical engineering. Specialising in development work for clients whose requirements cannot be satisfied by any commercially available equipment.
Design and development is undertaken for a wide range of applications and includes visible and infrared imaging systems, optical test systems and sensors.
The diversity of optically related problems demands innovative ideas and excellent awareness of the fundamentals and limitations of optical systems and associated technologies.
A senior optical systems engineer is required to strengthen the Company’s optical instrumentation design capability. The role will encompass all phases of the evolution of optical instrumentation development including:
presentations to customers promoting the Company’s capabilities and seeking business opportunities
review and refinement of customer requirements
creation of innovative solutions and conceptual designs
proposal preparation including costs and schedules
detailed design using CAD tools and preparation of system and subsystem specifications
practical system integration and testing
project management
The senior engineer will be required to liaise with specialists from other disciplines including electronics, software, structural, thermal, and mechanical.
The post demands a high calibre candidate with the following experience and capabilities:
at least 5 years relevant experience in the design of optical systems, with a bias towards imaging systems, incorporating scanners and multi-element detectors in the visible to long-wave infrared spectral region (the ideal candidate would have had particular experience in the design of Earth observation from satellites)
an ability to derive, analyse and optimise complex optical systems at the conceptual and detailed design level against customer requirements, taking into consideration aspects such as radiometry, image quality, scanning and detection requirements
an awareness of the emerging optical and electro-optical technologies and an appreciation of their advantages/disadvantages
project management experience and an ability to formulate technical programmes involving a wide range of disciplines and bring projects to completion within budget and on schedule
IT skills, including spreadsheets, word-processing and appropriate mathematical and CAD tools.
The successful candidate will need to liaise with customers. Consequently he/she will have excellent communication skills and a degree of commercial acumen.
A good degree in physics or a related engineering discipline, followed by specialist optical training and/or experience, will be required.
