Depending on your strengths, your role will include some of the following: take ownership of the planning and execution of a variety of R&D projects focusing on the material system and manufacturing processes used for photonic crystal fiber development and production, fabricating optical fiber from a variety of different glasses other than pure silica, improving the all-silica material system for PCF manufacture, exploring different fabrication options for silica based PCF, ownership of the planning and execution of a variety of scientifically focussed R&D projects. Other responsibilities may include: mentoring less experienced team members, recruitment of team members, maintaining and developing equipment and facilities
You should have at least a bachelor's degree in a relevant subject(Physics, optoelectronics, electronic engineering); it would be even better if you have a Masters or PhD in a relevant subject area
You should have some of the following specific skills: relevant materials science knowledge or experience of working with glass and optical fibers, familiarity with fibre fabrication techniques, glass specialist
In addition, you must be able to demonstrate transferable skills from the following list: ability to interpret and communicate scientific results, scientific problem solving, experimentation & practical laboratory work, capability to take on project management responsibility.
If you have any experience of the following areas it will be advantageous to your application: modelling photonic bandgap structures, waveguides in periodic materials, basic laboratory electronics and mechanics, fibre fabrication techniques
