To help us achieve our ambitions we need a COMMUNITY INITIATIVES TRAINEE based in Huddersfield on a 1 Year Fixed Term Contract. JOB PURPOSE To help Yorkshire Metropolitan Housing develop appropriate housing services for members of the Black and Minority Ethnic communities. To carry out a specific research project whilst developing and extending the post holder’s professional skills, knowledge and experience, with a one year post. DIMENSIONS Staff managed: None Budget responsibility: None Scope/volume of work: Kirklees, Bradford and Calderdale Local Authorities. Day to day supervision: Area Manager PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES 1. To make a positive contribution to the provision of housing services to the Association’s customers with a particular emphasis on BME communities, whilst gaining a broad and practical understanding of the work of the different parts of the organisation. 2. To follow a structured programme of work based training activities covering community development, housing management and development work tailored to the skills and interests of the post holder. 3. To assist the Area Manager in the identification and fostering of partnerships with key service providers and voluntary BME agencies in the designated area of operation in order to improve service delivery and to identify new opportunities of working. 4. To lead on the identification and development of ongoing links with local BME community projects. 5. To raise the BME community’s awareness of YMH work and enlist local involvement and support through face to face contact, outreach publicity and attending local meetings. 6. To conduct a piece of research or complete a work based project which directly contributes to achieving a key objective within the organisation’s business plan, as proposed by the post holder and agreed with their line manager. DECISION-MAKING The post holder will be required to make decisions in the management of their own workload, in line with the Association’s policies and procedures and standing orders. KEY FEATURES The post of Community Initiatives Trainee is a new post in the organisation. The post holder will play a key role in helping the Association to achieve its ambitions in relation to the delivery of services to the BME communities in the area of operation. You may be occasionally required to work out of hours from time to time in the evenings or weekends. This is an exciting new opportunity for someone to be a part of an important project which will help us deliver our business aspirations in the Bradford area. Reporting directly to the Area Manager you will be given training and support to help us develop appropriate services to members of the Black and Minority Ethnic communities. Your role will involve working with community groups, voluntary groups and statutory agencies in order to promote the service offered by Yorkshire Metropolitan Housing and to identify new opportunities for working. You must:- •Be confident and able to communicate effectively with people from different backgrounds •Be committed to the provision of high services. •Be able to adapt quickly to different roles and to demonstrate flexibility. •Demonstrate awareness of issues affecting socially excluded communities •Experience of working with communities groups or related service provision in either a paid or voluntary capacity. •Demonstrate experience and research skills. •Be a graduate or be in the process of studying for an appropriate qualification Closing date is Friday 18th June 2004.
