Temporary (6 months) Senior Communications Engineer
£23-38 per hour
Islington, NI

Description

This role is to ensure the stability and integrity of in-house VOIP, data and wireless network services. In addition, you will participate with the installation, monitoring, maintenance, support, and optimisation of all network hardware, software, and communication links. This individual will also analyse and resolve network hardware and software problems in a timely and accurate fashion using systems and tools made available. You will report to Network Manager or Network Supervisor.

Responsibilities

• Design and deploy company LANs, WANs, and wireless networks, including routers, hubs, switches, UPSs, and other hardware.
• Configure networks to ensure their smooth and reliable operation for fulfilling business objectives and processes.
• Monitor network performance and troubleshoot problem areas as needed.
• Collaborate with team members and department leaders to assess near- and long-term network capacity needs.
• Create and maintain documentation as it relates to network configuration, network mapping, processes, and service records.
• Ensure network connectivity of all servers, workstations, telephony equipment and other network appliances.
• Conduct research on network products, services, protocols, and standards to remain abreast of developments in the networking industry.
• Practice network asset management, including maintenance of network component inventory and related documentation and technical specifications information.
• Monitor and test network performance and provide network performance statistics and reports.
• Oversee new and existing equipment, hardware, and software upgrades.
• Perform security audits, and system backup and recovery.
• Interact with vendors, outsourcers, and contractors to secure network products and services.
• Manage and/or provide guidance to junior members of the team.

Position Requirements

• University degree in computer related subject or 3 years equivalent work experience.
• Cisco CCNP Certification is required.
• Proven experience and success with LAN, WAN design and implementation.
• Proven experience with network capacity planning, network security principles, and general network management best practices.
• Proven experience with large multi-site organisation with over 4000+ network devices.
• Strong hands-on technical knowledge of network and PC operating systems, including Cisco and Microsoft.
• Working technical knowledge of current network hardware, protocols, and Internet standards, including Cisco, Wireless, and Sonicwall and NetScreen appliances.
• Excellent network troubleshooting experience skills and experience.
• Extensive experience with Microsoft Office, Visio and other off the shelf applications.
• Competence with testing tools and procedures for data circuits.
• Knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws.
• Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
• Able to conduct research into networking issues and products as required.
• Ability to present ideas in user-friendly language.
• Highly self motivated and directed, with keen attention to detail.
• Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Able to effectively prioritise tasks in a high-pressure environment.
• Strong customer service orientation.
• Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.

Work Conditions

• On-call availability.
• Weekend and out-hours availability.
• Working in computer room environments for periods of time.
• Inspection of cables in floors, ceilings, patch panels and patching of cables.
• Lifting and transporting of moderately heavy objects, such as switches, routers, hubs, computers and peripherals.
• Hot desking office environment.

Catalyst 7200, 6500, 3700, 3500, 2900 Cisco IOS IP, OSPF, RIP, 3COM, Gray Systems, Ethernet, F/Gig-Ethernet, Ether-Channel, private DSL circuits, VLAN, IPX.

Testing & Monitoring Tools

Cisco Works, What's Up Gold, Solar Winds and Fluke handheld testing and monitoring equipment.
