Purchasing Engineer, South Coast
My client require an electronics engineer to lead a busy purchasing function. The job requires the taking of responsibility of the current purchasing functions. The successful applicant for the position will have:
A degree in Electronic Engineering or equivalent experience.
Some significant commercial experience within the electronics industry such as a Field Applications Engineer for an electronics manufacturer or distributor.
Familiarity with electronics design and manufacturing techniques.
Negotiating experience.
Advanced IT skills.
Additional training in sales techniques would also be an advantage.
Job Functions:
To introduce new products and technologies to the company?s R&D department. This involves:
Researching new and interesting technologies and recognising which may be useful to current and future products.
Evaluating the cost of technologies and the cost of their implementation.
Spotting, assessing and understanding useful technologies which night not be apparently directly related to the company but which may help the company?s product development (e.G. Hands free technology used in cars).
Thinking laterally when assessing potentially useful technologies.
To develop beneficial commercial relationships with the company?s suppliers. This involves:
Developing a thorough understanding of the technologies used in products.
Searching for and finding the best suppliers for the technologies required. Depending on the solutions, suppliers may be outside the UK.
Developing an understanding of the mechanisms that drive suppliers, for example: how electronic component distributors use design registration schemes, and why and how a subcontract electronics manufacturer is affected by set up and set down times.
Understanding costs, and of those of suppliers.
Correctly asserting the company?s interests in transactions by properly judging the supplier customer relationship.
To take outline specifications from design engineers for electronic components, and obtain competitive pricing for products as specified from a number of sources. This requires:
An understanding of a detailed engineering specification given by a development engineer, or the ability to cooperate with a design engineer to generate the specification.
An ability to find component sources from detailed engineering specifications and to determine compatibility of proposed alternative components.
A knowledge of how the electronics components market operates, and how to obtain best prices and stable supply of products.
An ability to complete commercial negotiations successfully.
To supervise the placing of purchase orders by an assistant. This requires:
Spot checking that the company?s systems are being used properly.
Close supervision and/or intervention for complex or high value transactions.
Managing the overall order placing process in order to ensure continuous supply whilst avoiding excess inventory.
Ensuring a correct level of interaction with suppliers.
To help develop the purchasing function within the company. This involves:
Responding to changes as the company grows in terms of suggesting and implementing new methods of working.
Becoming familiar with IT mechanisms such as web scripting and internal applications programming. Whilst implementation will largely be done by others, a detailed understanding of the process at a program level is necessary.
