Senior Technical Lead, Java/J2EE Development Team Leader

Our client is a profitable online company, and is now part of HomeAway, Inc., the world's largest network of holiday rental listing websites with over 70,000 properties available for rent directly from their owners. This is the largest website of its kind in the UK market, with over 19,300 properties. It is a high traffic website, and the business is growing at more than 40% per year, with an ambitious growth plan in the next few years.
They are looking for an experienced enterprise Java expert and leader that can drive their European development team's world-wide technology platform into the future. They have a hybrid Coldfusion and Java application with a SQL Server back-end and a competent, ambitious and enthusiastic global team based in both London and Austin, Texas. The team is responsible for the platform behind seven global consumer web sites. As technical lead on the European team, you will work closely with the European CTO and the US-based senior architect to implement major application sub-systems and services and lead the development of new features that have direct impact on the growth of the business.
The team is solving hard problems that do not always have obvious standard solutions so a jack-of-all-trades, I-can-do-that attitude and the capabilities to back it up are essential to success in this role.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Translation of complex functional requirements into detailed architecture and design
- Responsible for leading our efforts to refactor parts of our legacy Coldfusion application into Java
- Responsible for the design and implementation of new Java sub-systems and components
- Design for scalability, reliability and performance and using scientific methods to accurately test and prove that the software meets these requirements
- Coach and mentor junior team members on new technologies and software development skills
- Design for testing – automated unit and functional tested code with >70% coverage goals
Applicants will require the following skills, expertise and education:
- Significant development experience
- Bachelors degree or higher – preferably in Computer Science or Engineering
- Proven results oriented person with a delivery focus – especially in the areas of writing high-performance, reliable and maintainable code
- Proven expert in Java web applications development. While front end expertise is a plus, we're more interested in back-end experts
- Experience with large distributed applications and building/operating highly available systems
- Practices practical software design and designs for simplicity over elegance.
- Leads by example in all aspects of software development
- Strong software development skills (configuration management, issue tracking, estimation, Agile/Scrum.)
- Rabid testing advocate and expert (Junit, Watij, WebLoad, Emma)
- Java/Open-source expertise (Linux, Java 1.5, Spring, Ibatis, Hibernate, Jibx, Lucene, Resin, svn etc...)
- Familiarity with ColdFusion Coldfusion MX 7+ is a plus
- Experience of working with SQL Server 2000 or 2005
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- European languages – fluency in German, French or one of the Scandinavian languages a plus, though not essential
You will be a flexible, self-starting team leader with a solid, proven track record of large, complex internet projects. You'll ideally have a computer science background and will be able to showcase a portfolio of sites you have been involved in designing and building. You'll have a keen eye for detail and a desire to maintain exemplary output. You'll be experienced in taking ownership and responsibility for projects from conception through design to implementation and support.
