Linux Programmer, Web Developer
London, Holborn
£40,000 - £50,000
Our client is a small, Holborn-based start-up specialising in Social Networking. They are extremely busy and they need an experienced senior programmer from a Linux background to come and work with them.
As Linux Programmer, Web Developer you will also be managing a team and therefore previous management experience is necessary as is MySQL certification.
The role:
Our client is therefore looking for an experienced programmer with a strong background in large projects using proper programming methodologies.
A strong knowledge of MySQL is also a must, and knowledge of other native Linux DBMS would be an advantage.
Our client has its own Social Networking platform in development right now (PHP/MySQL) and they need someone to come in and take on the future development and maintenance of this software.
While much of their current development work is done in PHP, in the future they may wish to do some projects in other languages (such as C++, Java or Ruby) so ideally they are looking someone with a broad grounding in a number of interpreted and compiled Linux programming languages.
A good work ethic is essential. You'll work closely with their Product Development head, and you'll be leading everything they do from the front.
Experience required:
1. Linux system administration experience
2. PHP
3. Other languages native to Linux (including at least one compiled language)
4. MySQL (extensive previous experience)
5. Other DBMS native to Linux
6. Any Social Networking experience is an advantage
7. You must be able to provide a strong portfolio exampling your work
Technical Responsibilities
1. Development of new features for their Social Networking platform
2. Software maintenance of their platform
3. Development of bespoke features for clients
4. Possible management of a small team of developers going forward
5. A good understanding of the full development life cycle
6. Participation in documenting technical tasks and associated estimates
7. Participation in all application design surrounding the Social Networking platform
Skills Required
1. Degree educated in computer programming or a similar discipline (or equivalent)
2. Strong Linux experience
3. Strong Linux-based DBMS experience
4. Demonstrable structured and methodical way of working
5. High level of attention to detail
6. Numerate and articulate
7. Highly analytical and data driven
8. Strong software skills that support the delivery of high quality client facing solutions

They have partners and offices in the US (including San Francisco, Boston and North Carolina) so there are opportunities to travel and they already work with some major clients, including Infield Parking (a new NASCAR community in the US).
