DANTE is a truly European company based in Cambridge. Owned by European NRENs (National Research and Education Networks), it is an organisation whose primary purpose is to plan, build and operate pan-European networks for research and education. Working in partnership with Europe’s NRENs and in cooperation with the European Commission, DANTE has been fundamental to the success of European research networking over the last decade, delivering the data communications infrastructure essential to the success of many research projects in Europe today. DANTE also manages a number of other projects intended to extend access to Europe’s research networks further afield. Since 1 December 2001, the GÉANT network has been in full production service, taking over from the previous pan-European research network TEN-155. Reaching over 3500 research and education institutions in 32 European countries through its direct connection to 28 National and Regional Research and Education Networks, and also offering high-speed international connectivity to other world regions, GÉANT provides the highest capacity and offers the greatest geographic coverage of any network of its kind in the world. Enabling researchers to compete on an international stage by providing them with a world-class backbone that offers the bandwidth and services required for research activities at this level, GÉANT has dual roles of providing an infrastructure to support research and education, as well as providing an infrastructure for research itself. DANTE is now making preparations for the successor to GÉANT. This needs to be ready for service early in 2005 and is likely to take the form of an advanced, high-capacity (multiple tens of Gigabits), hybrid switched and routed pan-European backbone network. We are also examining the possibilities for making more use of short- and long-haul dark fibre for the provision of high-speed, wavelength-based, point-to-point transmission. DANTE is inviting applications for the position of Network Engineer to contribute to this important step in the development of pan-European research networking. The Role This is an excellent opportunity to develop your Internet expertise and enhance your knowledge of advanced networking technology. You will join an international team working at the leading edge of European Wide Area Networking research, design and implementation. The Requirements You should be competent in some of the following areas to make a valuable contribution to a dedicated team: • Knowledge of Internet Protocols • Knowledge of IPv6 • IP Routing Expertise • Knowledge of MPLS • Knowledge of Synchronous and Asynchronous Switching • Understanding of Advanced Optical Networking • Knowledge of telecommunications and Network Operations • Ability to work with Network Statistics and systems for their collection • Unix Programming Expertise The closing date for applications is 14 May 2004.
